My Top 5 Internet Marketing Tips

I have a pretty good idea now what works based on my eight years of doing Internet marketing. There are many ways to develop an online business and advertise online, but here are my top 5 marketing tips based on my own proven success record.

1. Build your email list. It is interesting that that was the focus of my efforts when I started back in 2002. This is still solid advice today.

A mailing list you develop relationships with really can pay you back many times over. Think of it as an asset that will always be there for you even if other parts of your Internet business are not.

2. Use article marketing. There are so many things you can do with an article, but using it as a traffic source from article directories continues to work.

Online business owners will find your article and publish it on their blog or ezine. If you have a good title people read your articles which can lead to more traffic for you.

Search engines will also pick up articles from article directories. They will rank those based on the quality of the information and the use of keyword phrases they want for their searchers

3. Blog and social bookmark. Consistently adding content to a blog is an excellent source of marketing for your business.

Bookmarking your articles into social directories using a service such as Only Wire really makes a difference in terms of how search engines spider your site.

4. Focus on 1 or 2 keyword phrases. You should build a targeted keyword list to use in all for all of your online promotions. Your keyword list can be used to build webpages around those targeted phrases.

However, you are best to focus on a couple of your primary keyword phrases in your marketing efforts. Hyperlink those keyword phrases over and over in the resource box of your articles and you can quickly climb up the search engine depending on how competitive the phrase is.

Be realistic in the phrases that you target. Choosing long tail keyword phrases will help you rank more quickly. However a competitive phrase can be worth the effort in terms of long term traffic once you have made it to page 1 of Google for that phrase.

5. Automate and outsource. The only way to develop a full-time Internet business is to get more work done.

Automate as much of your online marketing efforts as you possibly can. Outsource what you don't have time to do or do not like to do.

Keep it short.

Even if you've bought huge web space for your ad, it just wouldn't do for you to make use of all of it by cramming as much content in it as you can. Check your grammar.

No customer finds a badly written Internet marketing ad favorable. An Internet marketing ad that's filled with grammatical and punctuation errors leads to a highly negative impression on the company. It makes customers think that the people behind the ad are unprofessional and quite frankly, stupid. You definitely don't want that to happen with you so double and triple check your Internet marketing ad before having it distributed and displayed to all corners of the Internet.

Also, typographical errors are inexcusable: customers are not that forgiving of grammatical errors so even if it's a genuine typographical error on your part, customers are unlikely to believe it's so.

Use keywords.

Internet marketing ads are also ranked by search engines. They are indexed by search engine spiders, too, and that's why you still need to use the appropriate keywords for the appropriate number of times in your Internet marketing ad.

Avoid keyword stuffing. An Internet marketing ad with just a few keywords in it is infinitely better than an Internet marketing ad that's bogged down by keywords to the point of incoherence. The temptation to use keywords as often as possible is great, yes, but don't let yourself succumb to it. If you do, things might backfire and although you've got excellent search engine results for them, customers could turn their backs on you because they just don't like how you've designed your ad. In that case, search engine optimization didn't work so well for you, did it?

Pay attention to when and where your Internet marketing ads are being displayed.

Most advertising websites let you have a say on where and when your ads will be displayed and you should definitely exercise that right. There was one instance that a website promoting services for children's amusement and recreation had ads with adult content on their homepage. Later on, it turned out that the website and the advertiser had no idea about what was happening and it all led back to the advertisement company both of them were dealing with. Although neither had intended such a thing to happen, the damage had been done.

What Stops Local Business Owners From Doing Internet Marketing

Some of the real heroes in the United States economy today are local business owners. These are small businesses that employ people to do work right where they live. Many of them want to use the internet to market their business in the same way they have been marketing offline.

That does not work. Some of the concepts of marketing may be still apply, but how you utilize them has changed.

So why don't more small business owners figure out how to market in a local way? Here is what I am seeing so far.

1. They are too busy letting their business run them instead of running their business.

2. They have tried Internet marketing in the past and it has not worked for them.

3. They do not trust or believe marketing companies to do things online for them.

Let's look at each of these independently from each other.

Most small business owners have to work for a living. They are wearing so many hats that taking the time to learn how to do Internet marketing is out of the question. Their businesses are running them ragged 16 hours a day so where is the time to take on something more!

There is a pretty good chance that the sharp local business owner has tried, Google Adwords, or some form of search engine optimization with limited or poor results. They do not know why it didn't work for them, but their business did not grow enough to even cover the monthly costs of promoting it online.

Therefore they do not trust or believe it when someone has a great idea to market online for them for a fee. Can you blame them?

The problem is if you are taking the approach of just treading water and not marketing online with a full steam ahead attitude you are going to get buried. If you are in a local market with any number of competitors you may as well plan on losing market share every year.

Not only will you not grow, you are going to slip. Maybe only a little bit today, but I dread to think where you will be in 5 years.

You have 3 choices!

1. Become educated on effective Internet marketing.

2. Put someone in your company in charge of learning how to market online.

3. Outsource it to somebody to do it for you.

Putting it off any longer is a recipe for failure and you can look in the mirror 5 years for now and see why! Strong words for sure, but then the Internet is only just getting going in local business marketing and you can get on board now or fall way behind later.
